BALLSTON SPA INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL
GOES TO SUNDANCE

The 8th annual Ballston Spa International Short Film Festival (BSFF) has been consistently bringing Hollywood to the Capital District with top industry judges, world premieres and Oscar nominees. But this year, the BSFF goes to Sundance!

Sundance Institute Dr. Jan Broberg Carter, 4-time BSFF judge, festival winner, published film critic, director and award-winning film composer has invited BSFF Director Pamela Grandin to join her at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, founded by Robert Redford, in Park City, Utah. Grandin will be heading to Sundance with Carter from January 21st-27th.

While Carter is a seasoned Sundance attendee, this will be the first for Grandin. In addition to Carter’s advice, Grandin has sought advice from BSFF’s founder Daniel DeFabio and long time BSFF judge Larry Jackson – both providing extremely generous and helpful advice!

Excited doesn’t begin to describe Grandin’s thoughts about representing the BSFF at Sundance. Elated, scared, blessed and terrified are all words that raced through her head after she gave the “yes” to Carter’s invitation. The first year of the festival Grandin was just a spectator with her husband and children. Little did she know that four years later she would be stepping into the director position, and then four years after that, heading to Sundance as a result!

Grandin feels this wonderful opportunity comes at the perfect time for BSFF as the planning committee is gearing up this month to kick off the 2015 festival on August 7th and 8th of this year. Grandin is looking forward to connecting with short filmmakers, the organizer of the short film competition and discovering something new that she can bring back and implement in future festivals. And she is attending with Sundance Institute President and Founder, Robert Redford’s words in mind; “Storytellers broaden our minds: engage, provoke, inspire and ultimately, connect us.” She is looking forward to bringing some of that Sundance inspiration back to the area along with the Hollywood we already have. The new contacts and ideas that are always available at Sundance will be a good infusion for the ever growing film community here in the Capital District, and will hopefully provide some fun new events and films for the BSFF!

Six degrees of separation: BSFF-Redford-Sundance

The Ballston Spa Film Festival began in 2008 as an event presented by the Ballston Spa Business & Professional Association. In 2013, the 501c3 Ballston Spa Film Festival, Inc. (BSFF) was formed in an effort to continue to present a similar film festival and other activities to promote the art of filmmaking, to expand the awareness and appreciation of films to the community, and to provide unknown filmmakers an opportunity to show their films.

The Sundance Film Festival brings the most original storytellers together with the most adventurous audiences for its annual program of dramatic and documentary films, shorts, New Frontier films, installations, performances, panel discussions, and dynamic music events. Since 1985, hundreds of films launched at the Festival have gained critical recognition, received commercial distribution, and reached worldwide audiences eager for fresh perspectives and new voices. Year after year, the Festival pursues new ways to introduce more people to the most original and authentic storytelling.
